FSA/HSA Frequently Asked Questions
Insurance benefits can be confusing but at Faces Óptica we try to make the optical experience as easy as possible. FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account) are great supplements to the medical insurance and most plans will let you use them for optical services.
To help you navigate your next optical expense, here's a breakdown of our most common FSA and HSA inquiries as well as a few key things to keep in mind:
What’s the Difference Between an FSA and HSA?
FSA (Flexible Spending Account): This is an employer-sponsored account where you can set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible medical expenses. FSAs are great because they lower your taxable income, but be aware—most FSAs are “use-it-or-lose-it,” meaning you’ll need to spend the funds by the end of the year or forfeit them.
HSA (Health Savings Account): This is a tax-advantaged account for people with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). The key difference is that HSAs are more flexible: the funds roll over year after year, and you can even invest the money as a long-term savings tool.
How Can You Use Your FSA/HSA at Faces Optica?
• Eyeglasses: You can use your FSA or HSA to purchase prescription glasses. This includes the frames and lenses.
• Prescription Sunglasses: If your eye doctor prescribes sunglasses, those are typically eligible for FSA/HSA purchase as well.
Important Things to Keep in Mind:
1 Receipts Matter: Always keep your receipts and documentation. You may need them to prove your purchases are for qualified medical expenses. We can also send an itemized receipt upon request.
2 Check Your Plan Rules: FSAs and HSAs have different rules depending on your plan, so it’s important to confirm what is covered before making a purchase. When in doubt, double-check your plan details with your employer or benefits provider.
3 Use It or Lose It: If you have an FSA, remember that you’ll need to spend the funds before the year ends. Some employers may offer a grace period, but you don’t want to let that money go unused. Your eyes (and wallet) will thank you!
How to Pay with Your FSA/HSA:
Depending on the type of FSA/HSA card you may have, you can pay directly just like any debit card. Or if your employer requires you to pay out of pocket and submit your receipts for reimbursement, we can help with sending you whatever payment documentation you may need.
